Gaza Boss

Vybz Kartel, often referred to as the “Gaza Boss,” is a highly influential Jamaican dancehall artist, songwriter, and producer, known for revolutionizing modern dancehall music. Born Adidja Azim Palmer on January 7, 1976, in Portmore, Jamaica, he rose to fame in the early 2000s with his lyrical prowess, controversial persona, and ability to consistently deliver hit songs. Kartel founded the Portmore Empire, also known as “Gaza,” mentoring artists like Popcaan and Tommy Lee Sparta. His nickname “Gaza Boss” reflects both his leadership of the Gaza movement and his dominant role in the genre. Despite being imprisoned in 2014 for a murder conviction—which was overturned in 2024—Kartel remained a prolific force in music, releasing multiple albums and singles from behind bars. His impact on dancehall is unmatched, and his return to public life has reignited his legacy as one of the genre’s most iconic and controversial figures.
