Daniel Caesar, born Ashton Dumar Norwill Simmonds on April 5, 1995, in Toronto, Ontario, is a Canadian singer and songwriter renowned for his soulful blend of R&B, neo-soul, and gospel influences. Raised in Oshawa, Ontario, in a Christian household, he was deeply immersed in gospel music from an early age. At 17, he ventured into the music scene, initially facing challenges such as homelessness and couch surfing, which shaped his resilient and introspective artistry. His early works, including the EPs Praise Break (2014) and Pilgrim’s Paradise (2015), garnered attention and set the stage for his breakthrough.
Musically, Caesar draws inspiration from artists like Frank Ocean, Kanye West, Beyoncé, and Jim Morrison, blending elements of soul, gospel, and electronic R&B. His lyrics often delve into themes of love, faith, and personal introspection, resonating with a wide audience. Collaborating closely with producers Matthew Burnett and Jordan Evans, he co-founded Golden Child Recordings, maintaining a distinctive and authentic sound throughout his career.
